A few pieces that express our commitment to eco-friendly design are: The Spring Chair This contemporary rocking chair is made from reclaimed timber and truck springs. The particular chair shown here was made from heart-pine that was salvaged from a building in Tribeca, NYC (40 Warren Street) that was built in the 1850's. The growth rings indicate that the tree lived for about 200 years. This wood, which was headed for the landfill, was therefore pushing out of the soil sometime around the 1650s. We have given it a third life. We finished this chair with a thin coat of shellac to bring out the warmth and depth of the beautiful wood grain. We then added a couple of coats of water-based lacquer for superior durability. The joinery on this chair is strong: a single, super-sized, sliding dovetail joining the seat to the back. This chair is comfortable, fun and built to last for another century or two. Slippery Shelves - Bamboo The Slippery Shelves series from Cambium Studio are a shelving system for people who like to move. The piece is easy to hang on the wall, uses few materials and travels easily if you need to relocate. Each shelf can move easily through a dovetail in the backboard, offering new configurations in moments. Dimensions and materials can be selected to fit client's needs. The piece is offered in bamboo, FSC hardwoods and reclaimed timber. Trapezoid Table and Benches Tony's Table and Benches are Cambium Studio's latest creation. They were made from thick slabs felled from a large Pin Oak tree in our client's backyard. The wood was milled and dried then delivered to us for fabrication. We returned the wood to our client's home for a second use as a dining table and 3 benches. Knots and other defects were selected for their character instead of discarded as waste. True to our name we celebrated the cambium by removing the bark and exposing the live edge of the cambium layer. This is truly an exercise in using local materials for a job. Left-Overs - Judd Boxes Cambium Studio frequently uses materials left-over from custom jobs to design simple, affordable well made items to the public. Our latest left-overs are the Judd Boxes. These are rectangular storage boxes with sliding doors made from Knoll Imago panels. They are a perfect fit for CDs and other treasures. |
